Polar bears emerged far earlier than thought, DNA study indicates (+video)

Polar bears were previously thought to have split from brown bears some 150,000 years ago. But a study of the bears' mitochondrial DNA indicates that they became a distinct species about 600,000 years ago.?

Polar bears have been chilling on the ice far longer than is generally thought, new research suggests, and they probably interbred with brown bears at one point after the two species separated.

Skip to next paragraph Flocke the baby polar bear in this video was taught to crawl by the zookeepers at Nuremberg Zoo.

The new German study contradicts data from a study published last July in the journal Current Biology that suggested polar bears?separated from brown bears?150,000 years ago. The new study analyzed the bears' mitochondrial DNA, a special "additional genome" that lives in the cell's energy factories and is passed down only from the mother. The new study concludes that the bears became separate species closer to 600,000 years ago.

If the polar bears were only 150,000 years old, as suggested by the previous study, they would have had to evolve many specialized traits in a curiously brief time, the German researchers said.

"I've been long puzzled by the suggestion that the polar bears would have been such a miraculous and rapidly evolving species," Frank Hailer of the Senckenberg Nature Research Society in Frankfurt told LiveScience. "I had this lingering question: Is it really true?"

Nuclear problem solver

Hailer and his colleagues looked at the polar bear's nuclear DNA, which comes from both parents and is much larger than the mitochondrial genome. [Fun Facts About Polar Bears]

They compared 9,000 base-pair sequences (the chemicals that make up the "rungs" of DNA's ladderlike molecule) from the nuclear DNA of 45 polar, brown and black bears. This comparison let the researchers build a family tree, with the idea that the greater the genetic differences between the species, the farther they were apart in evolutionary time. They were able to estimate when the polar bears and brown bears separated.

"We found that polar bears are much older than we previously knew from other studies; their appearance dated to about 600,000 years ago," Hailer said. "That would make sense around that time for something like a?polar bear to evolve, because Arctic habitats were much larger than they are today, so there would have been much larger habitats that would have been suitable for a species like a polar bear."

Adapting to environment

The researchers say the mitochondrial DNA data could have come from a hybridization event between polar and brown bears 150,000 years ago during the last warm interglacial period. During that time, sea ice melted and polar bears took to the shores, where they came into?contact with brown bears.

The researchers say this hybridization (similar to the hybrid "grolar" or "pizzly" bears seen in recent years in Canada) would have introduced the brown bear mitochondrial DNA into the polar bear population. If the DNA from the brown bears helped the polar bears survive the warm period, it's possible it could have easily spread throughout the population.

It seems "the polar bear population at the time they?hybridized with brown bears?was very small," Hailer said. "The impact of hybridization was very large, so the piece of mitochondrial DNA that came from brown bears to polar bears replaced all the original polar bear mitochondrial DNA."

This study appears in the April 20 issue of the journal Science.

Humongous exploding fireball in sky probably a meteor, say scientists (+video)

For many people in Nevada and northern California,?Sunday morning?was disrupted by a sonic boom and a fireball streaking across the sky. ? ?

A thunderous boom accompanied by a greenish fireball hurtling across the sky shattered the morning tranquility of many residents of?Nevada and northern California on Sunday.?

According to the Associated Press, the?unannounced?pyrotechnics prompted a flood of 911 calls in both states.

"It made the shades in my room shake hard enough to slam into the window a couple times," ?one Reno, Nev.,?resident, who initially thought it was an earthquake, told the AP.?

"It knocked me off my feet and was shaking the house," said a mother in?Arnold, Calif., who said she heard a booming sound at about 8 a.m. "It sounded like it was next door."

Those who happened to be looking at the sky say they saw a blazing light hurtling across the sky.?

It is an event that makes you glad to be alive," Matthew Neal of San Francisco told the AP. "The main body was bright green and the head was bright red and white."

The fireball, which was visible in towns some 600 miles apart, was almost certainly what astronomers call a bolide, an exceptionally bright meteor. The loud crack was likely a sonic boom caused by the meteor's shockwave.

SPACE.com's?Denise Chow quotes?Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., who estimated that the meteor was moving at about?33,500 mph, weighed more than 150,000 lbs., and was roughly the size of a minivan. The energy released by the meteor as it entered the atmosphere was equivalent to about a fourth of the energy of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, he said.

No crater or debris has yet been found.?

The bolide came during the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower, which occurs annually as the earth passes through the icy tail of Comet Thatcher. Cooke told SPACE.com that it was unlikely that the two phenomena were related, but that he would not rule it out.

In any case, this meteor was probably composed of stuff much, much denser than ice.

Bolides are rare, but not completely unheard of. At about 10 p.m. on April 14, 2010, the night sky over southern Wisconsin turned to day as a meteor exploded in the atmosphere. NASA later estimated the size of that meteor to be about 3.3 feet in diameter. The following August, residents in Alabama spotted a fireball caused by a meteor moving at a whopping?134,000 mph.?

The study of meteors in the United States began with a spectacular bolide. On December 14, 1807, residents of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut spotted what one observer called a "globe of fire"?barreling?through the sky. Fragments were recovered in Weston, Conn., marking some of the earliest evidence that shooting stars were caused by rocks from space.?

Facebook Offers starts rolling out, spamming your news feed with coupons
When Facebook first announced Offers you we're probably wondering if there was even room for yet another coupon service. Between Google, Groupon, Yelp, Living Social and countless others we're not entirely sure there's a niche left untapped for Facebook, but that isn't going to stop Zuck and crew from trying. The service is officially rolling out as we speak, and offering its wares to any business with a Facebook page, regardless of size. The hope is that it'll catch on with smaller businesses in particular, which will now have an easy way to place deals directly into user's news feeds. Of course, after the failure of Facebook Deals, you'd be forgiven for assuming this experiment is doomed from moment one. Check out the video after the break and the source link for more details.

With $1M And An Alpha, Leaf Aims To Overhaul The Payments Experience For Local Merchants

Screen Shot 2012-04-13 at 7.09.47 AMLeaf, a Cambridge, Mass.-based startup, is aiming to make the experience of paying in a shop more modern with paperless receipts for customers and transaction data in the cloud for merchants. Backed with $1 million in seed funding, the company just kicked off an alpha with more than a dozen merchants in Boston. It enters a super competitive and complicated space with many other players like PayPal, Intuit, Square, which has its own Pay With Square service, and Stockholm's iZettle. So first off, Leaf is not a mobile wallet. It's not a dongle. It's a service that's either an app integrated into a merchant's existing point-of-sale terminal or that's part of a special terminal that Leaf leases for $20 a month. There will also be a consumer-facing app that you can download in two weeks for the iPhone and Android devices.

Fox News digs up its 'mole,' says it will fire him

By Reuters

Fox News on Wednesday said it was firing an employee who had anonymously posted videos and comments about behind-the-scenes workdays at the television network, leading media website Gawker to dub him the "mole."

Joe Muto, who had worked as an associate producer on commentator Bill O'Reilly's show at Fox, began his postings on social media websites on Tuesday, and Gawker then began publishing "installments" from the "mole" on its website.

After being suspended, Muto posted a picture of himself late on Wednesday afternoon inside Gawker's office saying "It's Me, Joe: The Fox Mole."

"They nailed me," Muto wrote on the Gawker website. "In the end, it was the digital trail that gave me away. ... They couldn't prove it entirely, but I was pretty much the only suspect."

While Muto's post said he had been suspended with pay, a statement from a Fox News spokeswoman late on Wednesday said he would be terminated.

"Joe Muto is fired effective April 12 (Thursday)," the statement said. "Once the network determined that Mr. Muto was the main culprit in less than 24 hours, he was suspended late today while we pursued concurrent avenues. We are continuing to explore legal recourse against Mr. Muto and possibly others."

The posts became widely discussed on social media and in newsrooms across the United States because they purported to give a glimpse inside the news channel known for conservative personalities such as O'Reilly and Sean Hannity.

Muto's posts included a video of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's off-air banter in an interview with Hannity in which the politician was caught on camera using the word "dressage" about horses.

"I think Mitt loses points with the GOP base for his correct pronunciation of dressage," Muto posted.

Another post railed about a gap in the bathroom stalls, with photo included, at Fox headquarters in New York.

On Wednesday afternoon, Fox and Muto engaged in an unusual game of cat and mouse. A representative told website Mediaite.com that the TV network had identified the person and was exploring its legal options, but Muto taunted Fox with another post saying, "I Am the Fox Mole, And I'm Still Here."

That changed late on Wednesday, Muto wrote, when he was ushered into a Fox attorney's office and "suspended indefinitely ... with pay, oddly enough." That posting was made before Fox confirmed that Muto would be fired.

Fox News is a unit of media giant News Corp.

Do you think Fox was correct in firing Muto? Was he out of line for sharing work-place tidbits on social media sites? Tell us on Facebook (yes, we get the irony).

Thai censors say out, damned spot, out to Macbeth film adaptation

The maker of 'Shakespeare Must Die' is appealing the decision, but Thai bureaucrats are nervous about the movie's political overtones.

The banning of a Thai cinema adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' is causing a stir in Thailand. The censors ruled that the movie ?has content that causes divisiveness among the people of the nation."

In a country where the royal family is protected from criticism by possibly the world's strictest lese-majeste laws (designed to prevent public criticism or ridicule of royals), any drama featuring regicide might be deemed taboo. But?Shakespeare Must Die?seems also to have touched a raw nerve with its depiction of Shakespeare's ambitious but guilt-ridden usurper blended in with scenes of protest and violence redolent of Thailand's recent past.

The country has been beset by on again, off again street protests since 2005. To some, the Macbeth character in the movie is reminiscent of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose apparent vaulting ambition prompted royalist suspicions that he had a real-life anti-monarchy agenda.

Thailand's Culture Ministry told director Samanrat Kanjanavanit that she could only proceed with a bowdlerized version of the government-funded movie, but the filmmakers held their ground.

A red-clad Grim Reaper in the movie was deemed too evocative of the red-shirt demonstrators who took to Bangkok's streets in 2010, in protests that turned violent with more than 90 killed. Another scene inspired by a gruesome massacre of student demonstrators in 1976 was also deemed unacceptable.

Director Samanrat, better known as Ing K., says the censorship makes little sense. "Why do they (the censors) find a 400-year-dead poet so threatening?,? she told the Monitor.? The original Macbeth was penned during a fractious period in English history, probably shortly after the 1605 "Gunpowder Plot," when Catholics aggrieved at religious discrimination sought to assassinate England's King James I, a Scot.

Now, four centuries later, Thailand's volatile politics could hold the key to the censors' anxiety over a now-archetypal tale about how power corrupts man. Mr. Thaksin was ousted from office in a 2006 coup backed by royalist street protestors and faces jail on corruption charges. But his sister Yingluck is the country's prime minister, after her Peua Thai party routed the royalist-leaning Democrats in a 2011 election.

Thailand's 84-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the world's longest-sitting monarch and remains popular, drawing vast crowds onto Bangkok's streets last December for his birthday celebrations. But the combination of color-coded antagonism ("red-shirts" for pro-Thaksin demonstrators, "yellow-shirts" for royalists)? and the King's age makes for nervy bureaucrats, and the censors' actions on the movie come after several recent high-profile jailings for lese-majeste.

While Ms. Yingluck's government has sparked renewed royalist ire by hinting that Thaksin could return to Thailand without having to do jail time, her administration simultaneously pledged not to amend Thailand's lese-majeste laws and to tighten censorship of websites containing allegedly offensive content.

Now it seems even The Bard of Avon is caught up in Thailand's censorship dragnet. Southeast Asia-based documentary filmmaker Bradley Cox saw his?Who Killed Chea Vichea? ? about a Cambodian trade unionist who was murdered in 2004 ? banned in Cambodia. Discussing?Shakespeare Must Die, Mr. Cox told the Monitor that ?it makes one think that the censors must not think that highly of the Thai people, if they feel that they cannot handle the imagery and messages contained in this movie.?

For Ing K., the censors' reaction to the movie says a lot about Thailand, where the government and the opposition are at odds over a reconciliation proposal that, to some, could mean impunity for those involved in recent political violence. ?We don't want to look at ourselves," she lamented, ?we want to forget about painful events in our history."

DOJ sues Apple over e-book price-fixing

An Apple Store employee sells Apple's new iPad to a customer at the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York.

By msnbc.com staff

The U.S. Justice Department sued Apple Wednesday over alleged electronic book price-fixing, according to a report on The Wall Street Journal?s website.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court by the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division, alleges Apple and the publishers reached an agreement where retail price competition would cease, retail e-books prices would increase significantly and Apple would be guarantee a 30 percent ?commission? on each e-book sold, the Journal said.

The agreement between Apple and the publishers allegedly occurred ahead of the introduction of the iPad in 2010 and as Amazon.com had driven e-book pricing down to $9.99 for newly released and best-selling e-books, the Journal said, citing the details of the lawsuit.

A settlement involving some of the publishers is expected to be filed Wednesday, the newspaper said.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to discuss ?a significant antitrust matter? at a press conference later Wednesday, according to the report.

Collusion between managers of U.S. firms and other domestic or foreign firms, over pricing or other monopolistic actions, is expressly forbidden by the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the cornerstone of U.S. antitrust policy, and can result in imprisonment, or substantial fines.

FBI: Strip club owner plotted to kill Texas mayor

By Scott Gordon, NBCDFW.com

An?owner of an Arlington, Texas,?strip club was charged Tuesday with trying to hire hit men to kill Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck and a city attorney involved in an ongoing?legal fight with the?bar.

Ryan Walker Grant, co-owner of Flashdancer, offered to pay $10,000 for each murder, an FBI agent wrote in a criminal complaint.

Flashdancer recently agreed to close for one year to settle a nuisance lawsuit filed by the city of Arlington and the Texas attorney general.

"They just jacked me for a year of business, and they're trying to jack me indefinitely," Grant was quoted as telling the supposed hit man, who was secretly cooperating with federal agents.

The FBI also said Grant requested that people from Mexico come to North Texas and commit the murders so they could quickly leave the country. He said he would use his child as an alibi, the complaint said.

The names of the city officials allegedly targeted were not?mentioned in the court documents, but a city news release Tuesday night confirmed they were?Mayor Cluck and contract city attorney Tom Brandt.

More news from NBCDFW.com

Both expressed appreciation for the FBI?investigation.

"I?feel confident this case will be thoroughly investigated," Cluck said in the statement. "We as a city council must always act in the best interests of the city of Arlington. I believe we've done that and will continue to do so."

Grant was arrested Monday by FBI agents after he met with the supposed hit man at Grant's Kennedale home, according to the criminal complaint.

Grant appeared before a federal judge Tuesday afternoon and was ordered held without bond until a detention hearing on Friday.

The Drug Enforcement Administration was also involved in the investigation.

Steven Swander, a Fort Worth attorney who represented Grant in the city lawsuit, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Grant's father Ron said his son was upset about losing business but would never have tried to hurt anyone.

"Oh good Lord no, because as far as -- he was looking forward to re-opening," Ron Grant said. "He certainly didn't have any, you know, animosity -- well, he wasn't happy about it. But he didn't voice any desires to harm anyone about it, that's for sure."

Investing In Professionally Managed Hedge Funds | Providence ...

A hedge fund is actually a type of investment which takes part in a wide range of investments and trading activities compared to other funds. Even so, hedge funds are generally open only to a particular class of investors as specified by regulatory agencies. Every individual can?t invest in these types of funds. Only specific investors can place their funds in them. Institutions like university foundations and endowments, pension funds, or individuals with high net worth are permitted to make an investment. The money invested in a hedge fund is used in a varied range of investments. However, liquid securities are the most typical investment that?s generally traded. These funds follow various investing approaches like leverage and short selling as a way to increase the return on investment.

The investment worth of the investor in a particular fund is established by his actual share of the net asset value of that fund. Thus, the increase and decrease in the total value of the fund?s assets plus the fund expenses are reflected in the amount that the investor can withdraw later.

The strategies of hedge funds are intended for attaining positive return on investment, despite whether the financial markets are falling or rising. The fund managers are professional and well qualified in managing finances and investments. They?re paid a management fee to compensate them for their expertise in addition to a performance fee if the overall value of the fund grows during the year. Investments worth billions of dollars are committed to these funds. According to an estimate, the size of the global hedge fund sector is around 2 trillion US dollars and is predicted to grow rapidly during the coming years.

Because these funds are not open to the general public, there are actually minimal constraints regarding investment and the methods associated with management of these funds compared to funds that are available to the general public. That is the main reason why these types of funds enjoy a lot of flexibility to participate in a diverse variety of investment opportunities and trading activities.

Men and women with enormous amounts of cash to invest and are ready to take serious risks like to invest in these types of funds. Given that the risks concerned are much higher, investors can lose their whole investment quite easily. Also, these funds promise massive return on investment and people might double their money rather quickly. Thus, individuals who love to take risks to earn greater returns prefer to invest in these types of funds.

Investing in hedge funds provides an excellent opportunity to earn big gains in a short time period. However, the risks are equally high. Since the funds are professionally managed, these funds promise higher return on investment even with the risks linked to investments and trading activities.

KIT: Processes at the surface of catalysts

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

In chemical industry, heterogeneous catalysis is of crucial importance to the manufacture of basic or fine chemicals, in catalytic converters of exhaust gas, or for the chemical storage of solar energy. Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum (RUB) have developed a new infrared spectroscopy method in order to study processes at surfaces of oxides used as catalysts. Their results are published in the renowned Angewandte Chemie journal.

Catalysts support many chemical reactions. In heterogeneous catalysis, the substance used as a catalyst and the reacting substances exist in various phases. Usually, the catalyst is a solid, while the reacting substances are gaseous. At the surface of catalytically active solids, highly complex chemical processes take place. They have to be understood in detail in order to further improve products and reduce costs. The processes are known well for metals. However, conversions at the surface of oxides ? compounds of metals or nonmetals with oxygen ? have hardly been studied so far.

The research team of Professor Christof W?ll from KIT and Professor Martin Muhler from RUB first studied processes at surfaces of oxide monocrystals and then transferred the findings to powders, the technically most important form of oxide materials. Doing this, they were the first to bridge the gap between fundamental research into reference systems and applied research into real catalysts. A newly developed combination device for infrared spectroscopy (IR) allows for highly precise measurements of the vibration frequency of carbon monoxide. The exact value of this vibration frequency is highly sensitive to defects.

Such defects result from the removal of individual oxygen atoms from oxide materials. "Oxygen defects act as active centers and give the material a high catalytic activity," explains Professor Christof W?ll, Director of the Institute of Functional Interfaces (IFG) of KIT. With the new combination device for infrared spectroscopy, the researchers from Karlsruhe and Bochum developed a method that was first calibrated for reference systems. For the first time, they then measured defect densities of real catalyst powders using a high-performance FTIR spectrometer made by Bruker Optics (VERTEX series).

To demonstrate their new method, the researchers used rutile, the most important modification of titanium dioxide (TiO2). "This material used as white pigment and in photocatalysis normally is chemically highly inert and rendered catalytically active by the oxygen defects only," explains Professor Christof W?ll. Professor Martin Muhler from RUB points out that such defects in powder materials have only been detected indirectly so far.

With their method, the researchers, including Dr. Mingchun Xu, Dr. Heshmat Noei, and Dr. Yuemin Wang from RUB as well as Dr. Karin Fink from the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) of KIT, followed the "Surface Science" approach developed by the Noble Prize laureate Gerhard Ertl. They demonstrated the potential of their method by studying the carbon-carbon coupling reaction of formaldehyde to ethylene. Doing this, it was confirmed that the density of oxygen defects at the surface of r-TiO2 nanoparticles is of decisive im-portance to the catalytic activity of the oxide powder and, hence, to the yield.

Two held on $9 million bail in Tulsa rampage

There is new evidence this morning that a shooting spree in Oklahoma may have been motivated by hate after one of the suspects was found to have posted racially charged comments on his Facebook page. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By Becky Bratu, msnbc.com

Two Oklahoma men were held on more than $9 million bond Monday following a shooting rampage that claimed three lives, injured two, and shook Tulsa's black community.

Alvin Watts, 32, and Jake England, 19, appeared before Judge Bill Hiddle via teleconference from the Tulsa County Jail Monday. They wore orange jumpsuits and said nothing as the judge set bail in a session that lasted less than two minutes.

The two men are held on suspicion of three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm with intent to kill, NBC News reported, in a shooting spree that targeted people in predominantly black neighborhoods.

The judge set an April 16 court date for the formal arraignment.

In Tulsa, a community steps up after heinous shootings?

According to TulsaWorld.com, police found the two men together on Sunday at a home not far from where the shootings occurred early Friday. Anonymous tips had indicated to police that England was the shooter, the TulsaWorld.com reported.

England's father Carl was shot and killed two years ago by an African-American man during a scuffle, and England, it appeared from a posting Thursday on his Facebook wall, was deeply disturbed by it.

?Today is two years that my dad has been gone shot by a?f------ n----- it's hard not to go off between that and sheran I'm gone in the head,? he wrote, according to the Tulsa World. ??

Sheran was Sheran Hart Wilde, England?s fianc?e, who killed herself in January.

Those killed in the alleged shooting spree were identified as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Allen, 31.?All are black, but police aren't saying whether they believe the killings were racially motivated.

NBC News and msnbc.com's Isolde Raftery contributed to this report.

Woods matches worst 4-round score at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) ? Tiger Woods arrived at Augusta National as a favorite to win his fifth green jacket. Instead, he left with his worst score as a pro.

A 74 on Sunday put Woods at 5-over 293 for the Masters, which was his worst four-round score since he posted the same number as a first-time amateur way back in 1995. He shot a 291 in 2007, but that was good enough for second that year, when it was windy and bitterly cold. When he left the course Sunday, he was tied for 41st, the same spot he finished in 1995.

"It was an off week at the wrong time," he said.

Woods never broke par on the course where he was so dominant that Masters officials were accused of trying to "Tiger-proof" it when they redesigned parts of it. Worse, he was just 1 under for the week on the par 5s, where he normally collects birdies by the handful.

"If I look back on the week, I played the par 5s atrociously," he said. "This is a golf course you just have to dominate the par 5s, and I did not do that at all this week."

Expectations that Woods would win again skyrocketed two weeks ago when he won at Bay Hill ? his first PGA Tour victory in 30 months. But things began unraveling when he closed with back-to-back bogeys Thursday, and he went into a full-scale meltdown Friday with a flurry of wayward tee shots, blocked approaches and missed putts from close range.

He cursed the bad shots or took mock swings in anger ? sometimes doing both. After a poor tee shot on 16, booted his 9-iron about 15 yards.

The boorish behavior drew criticism from some fans, and he could be subject to discipline by the PGA Tour.

Tour policy states that players can be disciplined for conduct unbecoming a professional even at tournaments that are co-sponsored or approved by the PGA Tour, such as the major championships. The tour doesn't comment on discipline, however, so whether he's fined might never be known.

"It's just the way it is," Woods said Sunday. "I'm trying to compete, and unfortunately I just didn't play well this week."

Woods has been stuck on 14 major championships, four shy of Jack Nicklaus' record, since winning the U.S. Open in a playoff in 2008 ? on a broken leg, no less. Since then, there's been the sex scandal that cost him his marriage and several sponsors, and injuries have kept him off the course for long stretches.

Now his problem is his swing. He's been reworking it with Sean Foley for more than 18 months, and it remains a work in progress.

"What's frustrating is I know what to do, and I just don't do it. I get out there and I just don't trust it at all," Woods said. "I can get it on the range, I can get it dialed in there. We'll work on the same things and it feels really good, and I go to the golf course and I just don't quite trust it. It just means I just need to do more reps."

When Woods won at Bay Hill, many saw it as a sign that he had mastered the changes he'd made with Foley. But his shots wound up all over the place, and he complained that bad habits were creeping back into his swing, saying he had "the Hank backswing, with the new downswing."

Woods worked with Hank Haney from 2004-10.

"When you get into tough situations, you revert back to your old motor patterns," Woods said. "That's kind of what happened to me this week."

But he has no doubt he's on the right path.

"You're still always working on little things. I know the big things that we're working on are done, but it's the little things, too, now," Woods said. "The details sometimes can be magnified. Especially on a golf course like this, it doesn't take much. You're a yard off here or there, which happened to be quite often, and next thing you know, I'm 40, 50 feet away."

Democrats Shafting the Military Again: A Financial Sneak Attack by Obama and the Democrats [Reader Post]

Democrats always attack, decimate, reduce, belittle, disarm, and de-fund the military.

Here is some more of the Democrat party putting down the military and making them pay taking their pay.

The United States military forces were greatly reduced by the Democrats after World War I in the years before the December 07, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. At that time our military had been reduced to a very dangerously low level. We had to pay dearly for that foolishness.

Such are the Democrats and their complete denial and ignorance of history.

The Democrats have always despised the American military, who maintains the freedom of the United States, so much so that they continuously attack the American military in any way they can, especially financially.

In the sixties the Air Force was paid twice a month, on the fifteenth and the thirtieth. Most military families lived payday to payday because the pay was so poor. They were forced to plan on two week budgets. Then their payday was changed to once a month, to being paid on the last business day of the month. The pay they planned on and needed on the fifteenth of the month did not happen. The total pay for the month was the same but families who planed on their pay every two weeks had to go an extra two weeks to receive that pay. This was extremely hard on those who had to live from payday to payday. For what it maybe worth, most of these families could have qualified for food stamps. In the military you could not even apply for food stamps.

But the government got a two week cash flow benefit.

So our payday became the last business day of the month, we survived and we adjusted.

Another outrage was promotion freezes; I went through several of these during my twenty plus years in the USAF.

Then there were the years of the pay freezes, no Cost Of Living Allowances (COLA, which was supposed to keep up with inflation).

There were years of reductions in forces, material, weapons, R&D, bases being closed, medical care (promised but not delivered).

There are many more.

Then the payday was changed again to the first business day of the month instead of the last business day of the month. Only a day or two change, but that had an effect on the government?s cash flow. Ours as well but we did not count, again we adjusted.

Here is the latest rip off (no other words apply).

The once a month pay that was paid on the first business day of the month was changed again.

December 2011, the payday was changed, this time the rule was that if the first of the month is a holiday or a weekend the payday would be the last business day of the preceding month.

Only a day or two you say?

Here is what a difference a day or two can make.

The kicker: January the first is always a holiday, therefore the January 2012 pay was moved to December 31, 2011.

The INTENDED consequences were that I and all other retired and active duty military personnel in all branches of military service would be taxed on thirteen months of pay (the thirteenth month was the January 02, 2012 pay that was received on December 31, 2011 and accounted as 2011 pay).

Count the days.

This increased my taxable income enough that part of my Social Security became taxable.

Wait!?.What?

In case you did not know, Social Security IS taxable. Now you know about another democrat party lie.

To continue: this shifting of income from 2012 to 2011 put me in higher tax brackets. It also made part of my Social Security taxable which bumped me into yet another higher tax bracket.

The end result was an additional $251.00 in income taxes. This was effectively a reduction in pay of $251.00 for that ?thirteenth month?.

That may not sound like much, but it is more than one month?s basic utilities (gas, water, and electric) for me.

How would you feel about that?

Obama and the democrats have once again given me and every retired and all active duty military personnel in all branches of service, another screwing. We will all have to pay taxes on thirteen months of pay for 2011. Multiply my cost/loss by the total number of retired and active duty military service personnel in all branches of service.

I am not typical; the real amount will be far higher.

That is a huge amount stripped (stolen) from our military and their families.

Once again our United States military pays the cost.

So where will this money go?

Where did the TARP go?

I can not understand how anyone, especially anyone in the military, can vote for Obama or any Democrat or even believe anything the Democrats say.

Well on second thought, maybe I can. I used to associate with people who were: ?Blissfully Blind?, ?Determinedly Stupid? and ?Invincibly Ignorant?. Thankfully I got away from them without being infected.

(I think know they were liberals)

In 2012 I will have to pay taxes on twelve months of pay, the January 2013 pay will be moved to 2012. That is twelve months of pay. That means there is no way I can ever recover from this financial fraud.

This is another story you will never see in the MSM (Marxist, Socialist, Media, also known as the propaganda arm of the Obama administration/Democrat party).

Be careful to do squats correctly. Put the bar down on your back close to the trap centers. This makes your glutes, hips and hamstrings work hard, allowing you to squat more weight than you would have been able to.

Try using a creatine supplement. Creatine helps give you endurance. Any type of supplements should be taken with care. Use these products in accordance with your body size and only as directed.

While it can be tempting to power your way through your workouts and to use maximum speed to do your repetitions, don?t do it! Going a a slower pace will wield better results, even though you may have to use lighter weight to accomplish it. A rep that lasts twenty seconds, devoting equal time to the lifting and lowering portions, will produce the best effects.

Do not ever skip breakfast if you are serious about building muscle. A good breakfast is an important part of a good workout day. Breakfast causes your body to exit fat-storing mode and enter fat-burning mode, which gives you an additional amount of energy during the whole day.

You should not increase your protein intake the minute you begin working out. Doing so can mean a boost in calories consumed, and if these are not getting burned off by the exercise, fat can start forming. Increase the protein in your diet slowly, and give you body a chance to convert it to muscle.

Try incorporating the farmer?s walk into your workout. Do this by keeping dumbbells of moderate weight at your side while walking as far as you can. Make sure your abs are tense and make your strides long. When you feel completely beat, you should take a break for about a minute and a half and then repeat the exercise. Do several repetitions of this technique daily.

Fitness and building muscle can work at any age, which is why it can work for you too! This article can help you attain the best possible body, while also improving your health in ways that will benefit you for life.

Davis Cup: Isner pulls US even with France

ROQUEBRUNE, France (AP) ? John Isner defeated Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 Friday, pulling the United States even with France after opening singles in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

The Americans needed a strong performance from Isner after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat 19-year-old Ryan Harrison 7-5, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to give France the lead.

Simon was called up to replace injured Gael Monfils this week. He has never beaten Isner and could not cope with the American's big serve. Simon also struggled with his own serve on the outdoor clay at Monte Carlo Country Club.

"I took to the court very confident," Isner said. "I played very well. Simple as that."

Saturday's doubles in the best-of-five series pits Bob and Mike Bryan against Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra.

"We'd love to be up 2-0, but 1-1 seems just about right and tomorrow will be a great doubles," U.S. captain Jim Courier said. "John did what he is supposed to do, which is to be emphatic and dominant."

The Bryans, the world's top-ranked doubles team, are unbeaten in Davis Cup since losing to France in 2008, when Llodra played with Arnaud Clement.

"We'll be in a great position if we win," France coach Guy Forget said. "If we lose, it will be difficult."

Like France, the U.S. is not at full strength. Harrison was playing his first meaningful Davis Cup match. He replaced ninth-ranked Mardy Fish, who pulled out this week because of fatigue.

In the other quarterfinals, host Czech Republic and Serbia were 1-1; Spain was up 2-0 on visiting Austria; and host Argentina was tied 1-1 with Croatia. The semifinals are in September.

Isner had nine aces broke Simon's serve four times. Simon, who dropped to 0-3 against Isner, failed to convert any of his five break-point chances.

"I could have made more first serves," Isner said. "But my forehand was on and I was going for it. I wasn't holding back and that was the game plan."

The 11th-ranked Isner took control when a double-break point put him ahead 4-0 in the second set. The third set was more competitive, but Simon failed to take his chances.

Still, Simon kept chipping away. When Isner missed an easy volley at the net, Simon got his chance to pull back a set with Isner on his second serve. But the American kept his cool, and his forehand winner down the line got him out of danger.

Earlier, the sixth-ranked Tsonga found it tough at times against Harrison. The American's aggressive play forced Tsonga to hurry shots as he tried to shorten rallies.

"I hope I play better in my next game (against Isner on Sunday)," Tsonga said. "I had to battle and it worked out quite well for me. Despite losing that third set, I still tried to play my own game."

Tsonga broke serve in the 12th game to take a laborious opening set in 54 minutes. He then began to find his range as Harrison's temper frayed.

"His major weakness is that he is very, very nervy," Tsonga said. "I knew that if I held on longer than him, it would be to my advantage."

Harrison smashed his racket into the ground following his double-fault that gave Tsonga a 3-1 lead in the second set.

"I never double-fault that much, which is funny," Harrison said. "The sun was against me on that side, and so was the wind."

Harrison, ranked 66th, was far from intimidated and applied the early pressure. But when Tsonga broke in the fourth game of the second set for 3-1, Harrison took it out on his racket, whacking it so violently the frame bent into a right angle.

"You look at him and think 'OK, he's not feeling great,'" Tsonga said.

That prompted Courier, a former two-time French Open champion, to have a word with Harrison. Courier offered a sympathetic ear at the end of the second set, nodding while Harrison spoke as they plotted strategy.

"I agreed with him that my balls were landing a bit short, and that (Tsonga) was playing the match on his own terms," Harrison said.

Their chat seemed to work. Harrison beat Tsonga in the third set, breaking his serve three times.

"I think he's an unpolished diamond," Courier said. "You don't want to snuff out someone's fire. Ryan is a high-energy guy. My job is to help him nurture that energy."
