Olympic viewing: NBC critics loud on social media

(AP) ? In the age of social media, NBC now has millions of television critics who make their opinions known about every aspect of Olympics coverage instantly.

They've even set up their own hashtag on Twitter: (hash)nbcfail. The online complaints focused Saturday on NBC's decision to air the marquee swimming event won by American Ryan Lochte on tape delay in prime time, and Friday on the network not streaming the opening ceremony online. Sunday's critics started early: people wondering why the U.S. men's basketball team's opening game aired on a cable network while women's cycling was shown on NBC.

The conversation is so active that NBC's executive producer of the games, Jim Bell, took to Twitter to answer critics and even change the way NBC is doing something in response.

"(hash)nbcfail is filled with a lot of crying and snark and humor, but NBC can actually learn something from it," said Jeff Jarvis, a media critic who writes the Buzzmachine.com blog.

Complaints about tape delayed coverage are an evergreen with Olympics held on foreign soil. But the London Games are the first with Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites in full flower, in a mobile phone era where people carry computers that instantly deliver news in their pockets. It has amplified the impatience of viewers who want to see events on their large-screen TVs instantly and haven't been mollified by NBC's decision to stream the events live online.

James Poniewozik, Time magazine TV critic, tweeted that "NBC tape delay coverage is like the airlines: its interest is in giving you the least satisfactory service you will still come back for."

That drew a quick response from NBC's Bell: "You do know that all sports events are being streamed live right?"

"I do, indeed!" replied Poniewozik. "Have enjoyed it. Apparently a lot of folks still prefer watching it on TV."

NBC says it saves big events for prime-time airing because that is when most viewers are available to watch them and where the network makes the bulk of its advertising revenue. Since prime time on the U.S. East Coast coincides with 1 a.m. London time, there are no events to air live then. NBC representatives noted that there were 39 hours of live events Sunday on NBC and its affiliated networks.

Jonathan Wald, who produces Piers Morgan's CNN talk show and used to work at NBC, tweeted that "the medal for most Olympic whining goes to everyone who complains about what happens every four years. Tape delay."

One of those complainers, in fact, was Morgan: He tweeted his disdain Friday for NBC's decision not to make the opening ceremony available live.

The advent of Twitter makes it seems like there's a lot of unhappiness when the majority of viewers are watching NBC on tape delay and appear satisfied with it, Wald said in an interview.

NBC can point to television ratings justifying their approach. The Nielsen company said the opening ceremony drew more than 40 million people Friday, the most ever for one of those Olympic events. Saturday's first night of coverage was seen by 28.7 million, another record, beating every other first night of Olympic competition. In Beijing four years ago, 24 million watched on the corresponding night.

Jarvis said he believes NBC could satisfy fans by, for example, televising events like Lochte's race live in the afternoon and then repeating it at night. He acknowledges, though, that he's not the one who'd potentially be risking millions of dollars in advertising revenue if such a decision cut into prime-time viewing.

NBC has tried to "hold on to old media strategies in a new media world," Jarvis said. "And that's a mistake."

Some of the online complaints seem to take special glee in bashing NBC, with a few describing it like an Olympic sport of its own. Some are quite personal, like the CNN producer who tweeted Sunday: "No USA basketball in my hotel room. Why they aren't putting it on NBC's main channel is beyond me!"

Bell, in some of his back-and-forth with online critics Sunday, answered one tweeter who described herself as a St. Louis mom and complained about NBC's "Nightly News" on Saturday airing results of events that hadn't been shown on the network yet. Bell tweeted that he'd look into it, and shortly after told her that "Nightly News" would announce a "spoiler alert" to tell people to avert their eyes if they didn't want to see results.

Not everyone online is a critic. On Sunday, the U.S. Olympic sailing team tweeted that it was "by far the greatest sailing TV coverage in Olympic history."

50 Great Cookbooks at Thomas Ford ? Week 30 | Thommy Ford ...

The title is a mouthful, but it tells you exactly what this excellent reference book is about. I started using What to Drink with What You Eat regularly (and ended up buying a copy) a few years ago when my husband and I found ourselves choosing more wines but not knowing how to decide.

We are not connoisseurs ? far from it! For years we drank one kind of wine with almost everything, a reduced calorie jug wine. Then we couldn?t find it any more. Suddenly we needed to start buying ?real? wine. We tried random reds and whites (never expensive ? remember, we were used to diluted jug wine). Sometimes we found a bottle that tasted especially good with our dinner. Then we would drink the same thing at another meal, and it would taste awful. Clearly we needed some guidance.

That?s when I discovered What to What to Drink with What You Eat at the library. I found that, whatever we were having for dinner, I could look it up in the book?s detailed alphabetical list, and it would tell me the best possible beverage matches as well as others that would taste nearly as good, and perhaps a few to avoid. We went from just choosing between red and white, to choosing Pinot Noir versus Shiraz, or Sauvignon Blanc versus Chardonnay. And it really did make a difference in our enjoyment!

To give an example of how the book is set up, if I look up ?Chicken,? I can see that generally Chardonnay or Pinot Noir are good choices. If I narrow it down to ?Fried? chicken, Sauvignon Blanc is recommended, and Red Burgundy is recommended for ?Coq Au Vin.? For ?Tikka Masala? (Indian-style butter chicken), beer, especially wheat beer, is recommended as well as several wines, both red and white. There is a hierarchy of how well a beverage will go with a particular dish, the better choices indicated by the typeface in bold or all caps, with an asterisk for the best possible pairings.

Another major section of the book is a list according to beverage. So, for exampe, if someone leaves you a six-pack of stout, you will get maximum enjoyment if you drink it with oysters, and it also goes well with dark chocolate desserts. A Spanish Rioja wine will be heavenly with lamb, and so forth.

Other sections of the book discuss general rules of food pairings, what wines to keep on hand, and how to select and serve beverages, including not only wine, but beer, water, tea and coffee. The final section gives favorite menu pairings from the experts.

With this book by your side, you will never feel inept about choosing a wine or other beverage! ? Review by Nancy

Canceled Tests Flame 'Serial Infector' Fears

Testing of more than 3,000 people who may have been infected with hepatitis C at a New Hampshire by an alleged "serial infector" was canceled this weekend, leaving some former patients scared and angry.

Health officials cancelled the weekend testing clinic, even though they asked the former patients at Exeter Hospital to get tested, because they said the logistics were too much.

David Kwiatkowski, a former lab technician at Exeter Hospital, was indicted last week for allegedly infecting 31 people with hepatitis C at that hospital, but might have infected thousands of patients in at least 13 hospitals where he has worked.

Kwiatkowski had allegedly been stealing syringes of the anesthetic Fentanyl intended for patients, injecting his own arm and then refilling those empty syringes with another liquid-like saline, according to a statement from the United States Attorney's Office in New Hampshire.

Since Kwiatkowski tested positive for hepatitis C in June 2010, he passed it on to the hospital patients who were injected with his used, saline-filled syringes, according to the affidavit.

"If he knew that he was infected and he put those needles back on the shelf, that is the definition of evil," Dr. Richard Besser, ABC News' Chief Health and Medical Editor, told Good Morning America. "Anyone who was in those hospitals when he was working there is potentially at risk. We're talking tens of thousands of people."

Tracking An Outbreak That Has Infected Thousands Watch Video

Kwiatskowski, 32, was a temporary employee at Exeter Hospital who has worked in at least eight hospitals in 13 states, Besser said.

Exeter Hospital issued a press release this week, indicating that the state Department of Health and Human Services and its Division of Public Health Services have decided to expand hepatitis C testing to anyone who was a patient in one of the hospital operating rooms or the intensive care unit. Government health officials are urging about 6,000 patients to get tested in Exeter Hospital alone, according to the release.

"You go under and you wake up hours later and you don't know who was around you," a former patient told The Boston Herald on condition of anonymity this week. "I'm scared. I have no idea who was around me when I was under and unfortunately, I was there three different times."

Kwiatkowski was arrested and indicted on July 19 for allegedly acquiring a controlled substance by fraud and tampering with a consumer product with "reckless disregard" for the risk of others, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire.

"The evidence gathered to date points irrefutably to Kwiatkowski as the source of the hepatitis C outbreak at Exeter Hospital," U.S. attorney John P. Kacavas said in a press release. "With his arrest, we have eliminated the 'serial infector' posed to public and health safety."

But Marlborough Police actually picked Kwiatkowski up at a Massachusetts Holiday Inn nearly a week before his arrest, on a July 13 medical call, according to police narrative obtained by ABCNews.com. After finding Kwiatkowski intoxicated and surrounded by pills and a note, officers determined he was "trying to harm himself."

"I noticed he was very unsteady on his feet and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath," Officer James O'Malley wrote in the report.

India had 56% of new leprosy infections in 2010

India accounted for 56 percent of the world's new leprosy infections in 2010 despite declaring itself free of the nerve-destroying disease five years earlier, a report said Saturday.

Of the 228,474 new leprosy cases in the world in 2010, India accounted for 126,800, S.D. Gokhale, president of the International Leprosy Union (India), told the Press Trust of India news agency.

"If the union and state governments do not take serious note of this fact and initiate effective steps to eradicate leprosy, the problem will become more acute," Gokhale was quoted as saying.

Leprosy is a curable chronic infectious disease which mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract and the eyes.

The bacteria that causes the disease multiply very slowly and the incubation period is about five years. Symptoms can take as long as 20 years to appear.

Gokhale, speaking following a three-day meeting of the International Leprosy Union in the western Indian city of Pune, said the leprosy infection figures had been confirmed by India's health ministry.

Beverly Hills Immigration Law: New York Initiative Aims to Shield ...

NEW YORK TIMES

By Aaron Edwards

July 25, 2012

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/26/nyregion/in-new-york-a-plan-to-help-illegal-immigrants-avoid-swindlers.html

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomos administration will pursue wide-ranging steps intended to thwart the potential for fraud and unscrupulous practices in response to President Obamas decision to allow many illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children to remain here without fear of deportation.

Mr. Cuomos plan calls for a multilingual news media outreach campaign, community programs and the mobilization of lawyers across New York State to help immigrants navigate the Obama administrations policy, which was announced last month.

Some critics of the policy, which will allow hundreds of thousands of young people to work and obtain drivers licenses and other documents, say it is an open invitation to deceitful actions by people who promote themselves as immigration consultants but often charge exorbitant fees and skirt the law.

Under Mr. Cuomos plan, which will be announced on Thursday, New York will pay for a team of immigration lawyers to work with organizations throughout the state to help illegal immigrants who qualify for the new policy and who seek federal permission to remain in the United States legally.

Among other requirements, immigrants must have entered the country before age 16, must be in school and must have no criminal records.

The New York Department of State has set aside $600,000 for the legal counsel team.

The state also plans to expand its immigrant service hot line to include information about the policy and to direct callers to service providers who can help young immigrants.

I think there is going to be a great deal of fraud, and these young people are going to need a great deal of help responding with the kinds of documents the federal government is going to require of them, Cesar A. Perales, New Yorks secretary of state, said. It became clear to us that this was going to be a golden opportunity for scammers.

Since Mr. Obamas announcement, immigrants nationwide have been seeking information on how to apply under the new provision of the law, but many have been turned away because United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has not finalized the process for accepting and handling applications.

The agency is expected to begin taking applications for deferred action as the federal reprieve granting illegal immigrants legal status is officially called by Aug. 15.

Angy Rivera, 21, who lives in Queens with her mother and three siblings, said she was torn about whether to apply. Though she says she meets the requirements under the provision, she fears that if she is rejected, her mother, who came to the United States illegally from Colombia in 1993, might be at risk.

Deferred action is like a Band-Aid, she said. It doesnt really solve the problem. If I didnt get it, Id be putting my familys information out there. That doesnt guarantee that my mom wont be called in. Its a tougher decision to make than people think.

The issue of immigration fraud is a familiar one for Mr. Cuomo: When he was New Yorks attorney general, he made cracking down on violators a top priority.

In 2009, he widened an investigation into businesses and people suspected of fraudulent practices, culminating in more than 50 subpoenas and the shutdown of the American Immigrant Federation, which was one of the states largest immigrant service providers, for incorrectly filing papers and using unaccredited lawyers.

Its not enough to say to people, Be careful; some people want to take your money, Mr. Perales said. What were saying is were also providing an alternative mechanism. That is what distinguishes what New York State wants to do from others who just warn you.

'Plain Jane Bandit' goes on bank robbery spree

A bank robber known as the "Plain Jane Bandit" is believed to have hit six Los Angeles area banks in recent weeks, including four in a 24 hour period.

During the robberies, the woman uses written and verbal demands, and says an accomplice is waiting for her outside the bank.

Witnesses describe the suspect as an Hispanic female between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5, weighs about 150 to 170 pounds, and is between 35 and 40 years old.

The woman's nick name came from an interview with a witness in one of the earlier robberies, in which the witness described the suspect as a "plain Jane."

Witnesses also say the woman may have a scar below or next to her right eye, as well as a tattoo on her right shoulder area.

The first robbery the "Plain Jane Bandit" is linked to was on July 12, followed by another one on July 19. She was quiet for a few days, until she began a spree, hitting two banks on July 23, followed by another two on July 24.

Health & Fitness

Arthritis is in general recognized with getting older. This isn't completely correct just because it's not going to totally come about with the seniors but could also happen to the young adult citizens. With this thought, information on its acceptable management is vital to help oneself or people to relieve the pain it ends in.

Give some thought to working out in the pool. Constantly exercising within a heated pool can be quite a nice plan particularly if you come across soreness with maybe the most elementary of motions. Your natural buoyancy on the water can certainly help minimise the strain in your joints and in addition the heat provided by it is going to truly permit you to loosen up those joints. This idea nevertheless , isn?t acceptable for those that have raised blood pressure levels. Even a water routine for the hands and fingers can supply relief. In the event your hands are in pain, a warm water exercise routine might achieve the same goal. Look at getting involved in hand routines within a sink of luke warm to warm water and see whether that does not help.

Quite possibly massage therapy can offer a certain amount of comfort for the people withrheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Therapeutic massage can help heat up as well as relax muscles which are tight because of the prolonged tenderness. A great rub down can similarly help the whole body to release endorphins, that are pure pain relief products.

So you can preserve overall flexibility and deal with rigid joints, become involved in a common fitness routine. Regular exercising works to provide benefits to you and your arthritis disorder in two ways. Initially, acceptable physical fitness combined with a healthy diet plan allows you to keep trim and physically fit. Second, workouts like yoga or Tai Chi focus on establishing flexible joints and muscles, which will help to lower the pain and disappointment involved with arthritis. Water exercise programmes are most definitely terribly theraputic for people with arthritis, because there is very little impact in the water. Even so , when you exercise, you need to be sure to never overdo this to shield yourself from unnecessary force on your joints.

One of several common treatments for relieving pain caused by arthritis is cold and warm compression placed on the sore joints. The determination concerning which kind to utilise is up to the directions of the health specialist or the way in which the body might respond to it. Warm therapies commonly eases the muscles and enlarge blood vessels so that it is far more cosy any time reduced blood flow and tightness attacks joint capsules.

Cold compression totally does the opposite, as being a short-term surface area exterior medicine to joint pain producing insensibility and minimising the soreness. The basic principle is to not have the hot and cold temperature in direct contact with the outer surface of the skin with the use of a barrier (ordinarily a towel) to prevent the one on one contact between your skin and extreme heat or cold origins inside 15 minutes of applying it. This process is restricted to people who've got below average blood circulation, diabetic issues, or neural diseases.

Using your gloves affords the heat obligatory to lower the discomfort. Utilizing a collection of stretch gloves could even help with reducing the redness that occurs with arthritis. For the best outcomes, wear your gloves all through the night as you sleep. Relax on over-the-counter ointments. These might deliver short term comfort but over use of these kinds of additions may actually trigger specific enzymes which may hurt the normal cartilage in the joints.

No one is looking forward to the joint and muscle tissue tenderness which comes in association with arthritis. However it's essential to recognize that you aren't defenseless versus this disorder. You could never have the choice to fully get rid of the pain and agony as a result of arthritis, however you can take measures to create a positive change. Begin with getting your body weight at the ideal amount. Unessential body weight implies you're placing a lot more force on your joints than you have to be. Just because you've got arthritis does not mean you want to be in never-ending pain.

Drop by our site for further material regarding the causes of arthritis. You?ll gain understanding together with resources on arthritis arthritis pain relief and arthritis treatment options and also other articles which you can take a quick look at.

Colorado police plan to enter shooting suspect's booby-trapped home

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - Colorado authorities are preparing a series of "controlled detonations" in the booby-trapped apartment of the 24-year-old student accused of going on a shooting rampage in a crowded movie theater during a showing of the new "Batman" film, police said on Saturday.

Dozens of law enforcement officials are at the Aurora, Colorado, apartment of suspect James Holmes, who officials believe booby trapped his home with what appear to be sophisticated explosives before going on a shooting rampage that killed 12 people and wounded dozens more.

"We're hoping to get in there within the next hour," Aurora police spokeswoman Sergeant Cassidee Carlson said at a press briefing at 8:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. EDT) outside the suspect's apartment building.

Police have evacuated five nearby buildings and created a perimeter of several blocks around Holmes' apartment, the top-floor unit of a three-story red brick building in a run-down neighborhood.

The shooting occurred early Friday out as hundreds of people watched sold-out midnight screenings of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a mall in Aurora.

The gunman -- armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, and wearing a full suit of tactical body armor, a helmet and a gas mask -- set off two smoke bombs before opening fire in the dark theater.

The University of Colorado Hospital, which treated 23 victims of the shooting, said 10 people had been released and five remained in critical condition.

Officers who arrived on scene within 90 seconds of the first emergency calls quickly took Holmes into custody in a parking lot behind the cinema, where he surrendered without a fight, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.

Holmes, a graduate student who authorities said had his hair dyed red and called himself "the Joker" in a reference to Batman's comic-book nemesis, was due to make an initial court appearance on Monday.

Photos of Holmes' apartment, taken by a camera raised up to the third-floor window, showed jars of ammunition on the floor and "things that look like mortar rounds," Oates said. There were also bottles filled with an unknown liquid as well as what appeared to be trip wires laid out across the apartment, he said.

"It is a very vexing problem, how to enter that apartment safely," Oates said.

Police declined to say what, if anything, Holmes said to them following his arrest. During an emotional press conference on Friday, Oates would not comment on possible motives for the massacre that stunned the community and the nation.

HORRIFIC SCENE

A memorial of flowers and candles has been set up at the Aurora shopping mall where the shooting rampage took place. A handwritten sign read: "7/20 gone not forgotten."

President Barack Obama called the shootings a reminder that life is fragile and promised that the federal government stood ready to do all it could to seek justice for the "heinous crime."

"Even as we come to learn how this happened and who's responsible, we may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize their fellow human beings," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, which was broadcast on Saturday.

Witnesses at the movie theater told of a horrific scene, with dazed victims bleeding from bullet wounds, spitting up blood and crying for help. Among those taken to hospitals as a precaution was a baby boy just a few months old.

"I slipped on some blood and landed on a lady. I shook her and said, 'We need to go; get up,' and there was no response, so I presumed she was dead," said Tanner Coon, 17.

The suspect may have blended in with other moviegoers who wore costumes as heroes and villains, and some witnesses said they believed at first that his appearance was a theatrical enhancement to the film.

"It was just straight chaos," said Jennifer Seeger, 25. "Everybody was starting to scream and run at that point. He went straight from here to here with a gun in my face at that point. That rifle was in my face and I honestly didn't know what to think."

The shooting evoked memories of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, 17 miles from Aurora, where two students opened fire and killed 12 students and a teacher.

It also resonated in the U.S. presidential race. Both Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, toned down their campaigns, pulled their ads from Colorado and dedicated their scheduled events to the victims.

The gunman was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a Glock .40-caliber handgun, Oates said. Police found an additional Glock .40-caliber handgun in his car, parked just outside the theater's rear emergency exit, he said.

Holmes had purchased the weapons legally at three area gun stores in the last 60 days and bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition, including a 100-round drum magazine for an assault rifle, Oates said.

He said police had not yet determined whether the rifle was fully or semi-automatic. Still, with the 100-round drum in place, the shooter could easily have squeezed off 50 to 60 shots in a minute, Oates said.

A law enforcement official who asked to remain anonymous said the suspect had purchased a ticket, entered the theater and propped open the emergency exit while he slipped out to "gear up" and return armed.

The portrait of Holmes that emerged in the hours following the shooting remained fuzzy, with only a speeding ticket on his record and nothing to suggest he was capable of an outburst of gun violence.

Holmes' family issued a statement of sympathy for the victims, saying, "Our heart goes out" to their loved ones, while they also asked for privacy from the media while they "process this information."

The Flames of Ocean Acidity

The age of fossil fuels has changed the oceans dramatically. What many might not know is that the oceans absorb about one-third of all human-caused carbon dioxide emissions. And while this has saved us from even more rapid climate change, few people realize the true effect this has had on our seas. The recent heat waves, droughts, floods and super derechos are only a fraction of the extreme weather we could expect to see if the oceans weren?t around to help us out.

But this grand favor the ocean has done to slow climate change has come at a cost to ocean health. The absorption of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels has substantially altered the ocean?s basic chemistry. In the hundred plus years since the Industrial Revolution, ocean waters have become, on average, 30 percent more acidic. Ocean acidification, or ?osteoporosis of the sea? as some are calling it, threatens animals like oysters, mussels, clams, corals and tiny marine snails called pteropods that use calcium carbonate to form their protective shells and skeletons. But it?s not only the small animals that are affected. Rising ocean acidity levels pose substantial threats to marine biodiversity, fisheries, food security and marine tourism. The last time similar changes in the ocean?s chemistry happened more than 200 million years ago, 95 percent of marine life went extinct.

The alarms are sounding. Last week, 2,600 top marine scientists signed a consensus statement urging immediate action to limit greenhouse gas emissions in order to save coral reefs and the people who depend on them. But time and again these warnings result in zero action, and the public is still largely unaware of the issue. Because we live on land and don?t experience these chemical changes directly, scientists have had difficulty illustrating what ocean acidification actually looks like ? until now.

Degrading Coral Reef

Above: Corals and coral reefs are severely threatened by processes such as ocean acidification: A, "Healthy" coral reef with living Acropora palmata and good water quality. B, Degraded coral reef with dead A. palmata and poor water quality. Processes such as ocean acidification are rapidly transforming healthy reefs into degraded reefs in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean and western tropical Atlantic Ocean regions. Photo Credit: Ryan Moyer, USGS website.

A recent paper published in the journal Science by Nicolas Gruber from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich demonstrates a new way of visualizing how ocean acidification will impact the California coast in upcoming decades. In the animation, the red coloring represents dangerous conditions for marine life, both for aragonite saturation state (left) and pH (right), and the pulses represent seasonal changes. If you keep watching over time, the graphic shows more and more red, almost like there are flames slowly engulfing our coastline. This imagery is alarming to say the least, but thankfully there is a way to stop those flames from rising. If we work to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions dramatically now, we can stop the rising tide of ocean acidification before it?s too late, and we can protect our seas for future generations.

Accounting and Record Keeping for Small Businesses

There are a couple of aspects to small business accounting and record keeping- the actual structure as well as accounting software.? Structurally, you want to separate your personal self (and expenses) from the business as much as possible.? That means setting up a separate business account, not running illegitimate personal expenses through the business.? Just because it is via the business bank account doesn't make it a business expense.

I would recommend tracking income and expenses via some sort of software, whether internally or via an external bookkeeper.? In my professional opinion, none of them are as off the shelf as the software companies would make them out to be- I've seen a lot of messy files - "I entered everything in Quickbooks".? ?Note that Quickbooks online does not have the full blown functionality of Quickbooks desktop.? There is also some up-and-coming cloud based software, such as Xero, Freshbooks, and Bill.com that are worth a look.

One, Three, or Six Microdermabrasion Treatments with Ultrasound Therapy at Skin-Kari LLC in Maitland (Up to 68% Off)

  • $249 for six microdermabrasion treatments with ultrasound therapy (up to a $780 value)

Crystal-free microdermabrasion treatments exfoliate skin while smoothing away fine lines, acne scars, and wrinkles. Ultrasound therapy delivers as many as three million vibrations per second to the deeper layers of the epidermis with the aim of increasing circulation and collagen production.

Skin-Kari LLC

Kari Stoppenbach spent 14 years honing her craft as an aesthetic technician, working alongside cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists while developing her own line of postoperative-friendly makeup. These experiences inspired her to open her own spa, where she performs cutting-edge medical-grade procedures, including ultrasound therapy and custom chemical peels designed to remove acne scars or sun spots and leave skin with a firm, more youthful look.

After years of witnessing and performing countless cosmetic procedures, Kari noticed that the limited number of postoperative concealers frustrated her patients. She kept these frustrations in mind when she designed her own paraben- and dye-free line of makeup, Skin-Kari Minerals, along with her Skin-Kari line of skincare products made from organic ingredients. The products help skin heal after a med-spa treatment by shielding it against UV rays from the sun and exposed lightsabers, hiding any signs of redness while employing zinc to promote natural healing.

Though Skin-Kari LLC sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

Two- or Three-Night Stay at Florida Deluxe Villas in Greater Orlando

Spacious Town Homes with Shuttle Access to Disney

Orlando is the undisputed theme-park capital of the world?it's home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and a slew of smaller family-friendly attractions, making it feel otherworldly at times. Florida Deluxe Villas' town homes and condos, meanwhile, have a homey feel to them. Many of the homes have individual owners. The three-bedroom town homes and the two- and three-bedroom condos are all outfitted with eat-in kitchens, Internet access, washers and dryers, and cozy living rooms. And nearby, you can find clubhouses that feature fitness centers, jacuzzis, pools, and saunas.

Florida Deluxe Villas also serves as an entertainment curator; a concierge is on duty at the welcome center 24 hours a day to assist you. As a Disney-authorized independent retailer, the concierge can sell tickets to the theme parks as well as discounted admission to other area attractions and dinner shows. A shuttle service ($15?$50 for five people, depending on destination) ferries groups to a number of attractions, with possible stops including Disney World's four theme parks and two water parks.

Kissimmee, Florida: Easy Access to Walt Disney World and Major Orlando Attractions

The town homes that make up Florida Deluxe Villas are scattered throughout Kissimmee, the city directly adjacent to Walt Disney World. Disney's Hollywood Studios captures the magic of moviemaking at attractions such as The Great Movie Ride and during shows such as Muppet*Vision 3-D. On the Studio Backlot tour, you can take a 35-minute guided tour through a prop warehouse and experience a simulated disaster in Catastrophe Canyon.

Nearby is Disney's Blizzard Beach water park, which resembles a frosty ski resort. Chairlifts here whisk you to the top of a freefalling water slide known as Summit Plummet, and kids can slide down faux ice luges at Tike's Peak or take a face-first ride down the Toboggan Racers slide.

Outside of Disney World, the greater Orlando area is stuffed with other theme parks, including Universal Studios Florida, Universal's Islands of Adventure, and SeaWorld. For a break from the crowds, take a drive up to the town of Winter Park, which has a Saturday farmers' market, designer boutiques, and scenic boat tours along Lake Osceola.

$19 for a SkyCoaster Flight at Fun Spot USA in Kissimmee (Up to $40 Value)

Massage and mediation are the most common forms of stress relief, but now more and more people are turning to shriek therapy. Scream your worries away with this Groupon.

$19 for a SkyCoaster Flight for One (Up to $40 Value)

  • Combines skydiving and hang gliding in one swinging motion
  • World's tallest sky coaster (300 ft. drop)
  • Fall as fast as 80 mph
  • Named one of Travel Channel's Extreme Terror Rides

Fun Spot USA

To really understand what Fun Spot is all about, you only need to watch the commercial blooper reel by owner John Arie on the website. In this two-minute reel, John flubs his lines about go-karts, mishandles his props, and chides his off-camera director for being a stickler while teacups spin in the background. Despite his mistakes, the smile never leaves his face; it's not surprising that the motto of the action park is "Life is Great!"

The family-friendly amusement park has the charm of a small-town carnival, but the colorful adventure never packs up and leaves. There are activities for kids, such as a bounce castle, a fun slide, and an arcade, but where Fun Spot really makes its name is with its thrilling ride for adults. The SkyCoaster, which is part skydive simulator and part hang glider, harnesses up to three screamers and slowly pulls them up 300 feet in the air before dropping them above the park at 80 miles per hour.

Speedsters can also head over to a series of go-kart tracks that keep riders pushing pedals through banked bowls and hairpin curves on a multilevel track. The park rounds out its attractions list with bumper cars, a tilt-a-whirl, and the invisible waves at Surf's Up.

At Dance Centers of Orlando, instructors work to foster an atmosphere of inclusion and support, helping kids to develop a strong sense of self-confidence to complement their fancy footwork. In each of the three studios, instructors fuse choreographed routines, dance combinations, and technical exercises into curricula focused on styles ranging from ballet and tap to hip-hop and martial arts. The studio's Marley sprung floors support little twinkle toes, helping to prevent injury. As the youths hone their skills, their parents can observe their progress on closed-circuit TVs or search the web via free WiFi to find the best ways to make nutcrackers come to life.

Two-Night Stay in a One- or Two-Bedroom Estate Villa at Reunion Resort near Kissimmee

Golf Courses and Water Park on Gated Property Close to Disney

One of the most truly magical experiences at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World is the nightly fireworks display. Tinker Bell flies to the top of Cinderella's castle, the music soars, the sky turns a dozen different colors, and you're instantly transported back to childhood. But you don?t have to be in the park to see the pyrotechnics. The whole thing is visible from the towers of Reunion Resort, located just 6 miles away.

Reunion guests have easy access to Orlando?s theme parks and a slew of activities onsite as well. The resort has its own water park?complete with a 1,000-foot-long lazy river?and three 18-hole golf courses, each designed by a legend of the game: Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Arnold Palmer. Watson?s Independence course reflects his love of British-style play with more than a dozen types of native grasses and rolling hills lined with azaleas and camellias. Nicklaus?s Tradition course, meanwhile, cuts through a nature preserve and former citrus grove where wild turkeys and armadillos have been spotted among the pines.

Two of the courses? clubhouses are located steps from the 11-story Reunion Grande tower, where Estate Villa suites can be found. Each comes with a private balcony and fully equipped kitchen for in-room dining. The resort?s restaurants and snack bars, on the other hand, provide numerous options for out-of-room dining. The Eleven lounge on the top floor specializes in American cuisine, but its major draws are handcrafted cocktails and a rooftop pool with views of Orlando.

Reunion, Florida: Sun-Drenched Community near Orlando?s Amusement Parks

Located just southwest of Orlando, Reunion lies less than 30 minutes from central Florida's most popular attractions, including Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios. At the latter?s Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you can peruse Zonko's Joke Shop, sip butterbeer at Three Broomsticks, and speed through the sky on the Flight of the Hippogriff ride. Orlando may be known for its amusement parks, but the restaurant scene is starting to garner attention. Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and James Beard Award?winner Norman Van Aken both have restaurants here. Many local eateries offer fresh seafood from the Atlantic and incorporate the flavors of Caribbean nations such as Cuba and Jamaica.

Trend Studios Orlando

As co-owners of Trend Studios Orlando, Matthew Bengston and Anthony Cortes have cultivated a business that reflects their own areas of expertise. Matthew brings his skills as a stylist to the hair salon, where he and his team cut men?s and women?s hair, add highlights, and lengthen locks with extensions. For his part, Anthony draws on his talents as a teeth-whitening and airbrush-tanning specialist to oversee those branches of the studio. Both Matthew and Anthony go out of their way to ensure a comfortable experience for clients: Anthony?s airbrush tans, for example, employ an Evolv. Sidekick tanning system that warms up its tanning solution before gently misting skin. For the spa services in which they do not specialize, Matthew and Anthony employ a knowledgeable staff that performs massages, waxing treatments, and a cappella renditions of the spa?s relaxing soundtrack.
