French cry foul as California foie gras ban nears

In advance of the July 1 date, some businesses have moved out of state and others have closed. Many chefs and restaurants have held foie gras dinners in a final toast to the delicacy they love, while animal rights activists have cheered and jeered. And n France, the major producer and consumer of the delicacy, politicians and chefs have cried foul.

"I'm sad. I'm disappointed. I'm going to get as much in as I can while we can," said Christina Kurtz, who attended a six-course foie gras dinner recently in the southern California city of Santa Monica, adjacent to Los Angeles.

Foie gras, which means "fatty liver" in French, is produced by force-feeding corn - a process known as gavage - to ducks and geese with a tube-like device in order to enlarge their livers.

When fattened, the birds are slaughtered and the organs are harvested to make gourmet dishes.

The process dates back centuries, but in late 2004, then-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill banning the sale of foie gras. The law included a grace period to allow chefs and farmers time to find alternative production.

Seven-and-one-half years and no new methods later, any restaurant serving the gourmet food will be fined up to $1000.

It is unclear exactly how much foie gras is consumed in the state, but well before the ban, some California cooks had banded together as C.H.E.F.S. - the Coalition of Humane and Ethical Farming Standards - to raise awareness about how the ban will impact their profession.

"It's a treat for chefs to get to cook for people to enjoy foie gras. And it's an art, not everyone knows how to cook foie gras properly, and it's unfortunate for the consumer to have it taken away," said Nyesha Arrington, head chef at the Wilshire restaurant in Santa Monica.

Final dish?

The ban impacts a small group of farms and shops that have already moved out of state, including culinary website Mirepoix, which specializes in foie gras and other gourmet foods from a new home in Nevada.

Laurel Pine, founder of Mirepoix, said in the last month sales have boomed with most packages shipping to California. She expects that when June sales have wrapped up, she will have sold four times the usual amount of the delicacy.

"People in California are buying products they can keep in their freezer for the next two years," said Pine.

The ban has been a victory for animal rights activists, who have crashed some of the foie gras dinner parties, holding banners asking "how much cruelty can you swallow," and chanting "that's not dinner, that's diseased liver."

"Foie gras is a barbaric product. It never should have existed. It certainly should not exist now in 2012 ... Culture, tradition, none of it justifies torturing an animal," said Bryan Pease, co-founder of the Animal Protection and Rescue League.

Yet, some farmers and foodmakers don't see gavage as cruel, and point out that the animals' physiology can handle the process. And the French, as a country, are upset.

"It's a question of cultural shock," said Marie-Pierre Pe, general delegate of the Paris-based Interprofessional Committee of Foie Gras. "Could you imagine France banning ketchup or hamburgers?"

Pe told Reuters the economic effect was negligible, given already low exports to the United States due to customs barriers and veterinary rules. France's foreign ministry weighed-in during an online press briefing on Thursday, saying the country "can only regret California's decision."

Star chef Andre Daguin likened the ban to the US Prohibition against alcohol during the 1920s.

"This will spur consumption and people will make fortunes thanks to it. I wouldn't go as far as to say it will create a new Al Capone, but it's like that," Daguin said.

Some Californians agree.

"Truth is, it's going to be like pot where it's supposed to be illegal but anybody can get it," said Los Angeles chef Mark Peel.

"If you want to get Cuban rum, you can, if you want to get Cuban cigars, you can ... you just have to do your research and find it."

Indeed, that won?t be hard for customers of Mirepoix. Pine plans to open a foie gras shop on the California-Nevada border.

You can connect it to a heart rate monitoring strap, too, for much deeper health information, although the cost for all the components adds up.

Between the heart rate monitor (I used an ANT+ Garmin Heart Rate Monitor, about $25-$60), Digifit Connect device ($59.95), which plugs into the iPhone's base and enables the monitor to send information to the app, and $2.99 in-app purchase for heart rate monitoring support, the total cost is more than $75. Plus, if you want to add Fitness Assessments features, which let you create custom heart rate and pace zones, you'll have to shell out another $3.99.

The in-app purchase for heart-rate monitoring is the cost that stings, particularly if you've just spent $60 on the company's Digifit Connect, assuming (quite reasonably) that access to the data would be included.

Solid Core Metrics
The app itself works well?with or without the heart rate information, and, in my testing, the worst problem I encountered was that the heart rate strap and Digifit Connect lost contact with each other at least once every time I worked out. But when it does, the app continues to collect primary data. The timer still runs, the GPS map-plotting continues, and even calorie-burn estimations keep ticking. In other words, the app does a fine job holding up its end of the bargain, even when the other components fail. The Digifit app also chugs along just fine when the screen is locked, helping to minimize the battery drain (the GPS mapping feature will invariably, but unavoidably, tax the battery).

During a workout, the Digifit iPhone app can clue you into your own progress with voice announcements, vibrations, and push notifications. You can customize what kind of prompts you receive, if at all, and when. For example, you can set the Digifit to announce when you've hit your first mile, or to vibrate after 20 minutes, or to push a notification to the locked screen when your heart rate hits a certain number of beats per minute.

At the end of a workout, the app summarizes distance, pace, and other typical statistics you'd expect to find in a fitness tracking app.

The Digifit app has a wealth of customization options, settings, and features, crucial to a personal fitness app. You can set your height, weight, age, and sex in order for the app to better estimate calorie burn, as well as give accurate "zones" for your heart rate, like "warm-up zone." One thoughtful addition is a set of charts in which you can enter your resting heart rate, weight, blood pressure, and other personal metrics.

Digifit's Costs Add Up

Queen shakes hands with ex-IRA chief

BELFAST (Reuters) - The Queen shook the hand of former IRA guerrilla commander Martin McGuinness for the first time on Wednesday, drawing a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, including that of her cousin.

The meeting with McGuinness, who is now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, comes 14 years after the IRA ended its war against British rule in the province, and is one of the last big milestones in a peace process whose success has been studied around the world.

The queen met McGuinness, Northern Ireland's Unionist first minister Peter Robinson and Irish President Michael D.Higgins for just under 10 minutes behind closed doors in a theatre in a leafy suburb of Belfast cordoned off by hundreds of police.

McGuinness shook the gloved hand of the queen a second time as she left the theatre, this time in front of television cameras, but unlike other guests chose not to bow his head.

The queen's bright green outfit appeared to have been chosen with Ireland's national colour in mind, and McGuinness wished a smiling monarch well in Irish, saying "Slan agus beannacht", which he told her means "Goodbye and God speed".

There has been scattered opposition to the gesture of reconciliation from dissident Irish militants and from some of the IRA's victims. But the vast majority of the province's politicians backed the meeting, the first between the queen and a top member of the IRA or its former political wing, Sinn Fein.

"Today is a huge event and it is, in a sense, the ultimate handshake," John Reid, British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2001 to 2002, told the BBC.

"On all sorts of levels this is a hugely significant step but it is only one more step in a long process. This may take generations - to get back to absolute reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland."

OBSTACLE REMOVED

Ireland's president said the handshake was "something that had to be done" to remove an obstacle to reconciliation. Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the gesture was symbolic but added that "the journey isn't near completion".

A few hours later, the queen waved to crowds from an open-topped car at a celebration of her Diamond Jubilee attended by over 20,000 people - a stark contrast to the armoured limousines that have been a mandatory precaution on previous visits.

The queen regularly meets senior Unionist politicians, Protestants who want Northern Ireland to stay inside the United Kingdom, but not Sinn Fein - the largest party representing Catholic nationalists who want a united Ireland.

McGuinness is a hero to Republican hardliners, but has long been a hate figure to Unionists, many of whom harbour deep suspicions about his past.

He admits he was on the front line in the war with British forces, including on Bloody Sunday in 1972, when troops shot dead 13 unarmed protesters, but says he never killed anyone.

A British report said that McGuinness probably was armed with a submachine gun on Bloody Sunday, but did nothing to provoke the massacre. He has said he left the IRA in 1974, but most historians believe he was active for most of its campaign.

For the queen and her consort Prince Philip, who shook McGuinness's hand more cursorily, the conflict had a personal edge.

The queen's cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was also Philip's uncle, was killed by the IRA in 1979 with three others, including his 14-year-old grandson, when his boat was blown up while he was on holiday in Ireland.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 people killed during the 30 years of the "Troubles".

McGuinness told the queen that he agreed with comments she made last year that all victims of the conflict should be remembered, according to a source who was at the meeting.

"STILL A REPUBLICAN"

McGuinness said on Tuesday that, while he represented people who had been badly hurt by British state violence, he was also big enough to understand that the queen and other families in Britain had also lost loved ones.

Asked by reporters after the meeting if his convictions had changed, he said he was "still a Republican".

Sinn Fein, which has become increasingly popular south of the Irish border as the main party opposing an EU/IMF bailout, is keen to bolster its image as a mainstream party and distance itself from a violent past that alienates many southern voters.

It still wants a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of Britain, but in the short term its aim is to be in government in the north and south simultaneously.

Only last year, Sinn Fein rejected invitations to attend events during the queen's landmark visit to the Irish capital Dublin, the first by a British monarch since the republic won independence from Britain in 1921.

Some Republicans branded McGuinness a traitor for meeting a queen who is also commander-in-chief of Britain's armed forces.

"People are not unhappy that someone is shaking her hand, just not him. He's a hypocrite," said Martin, a 42-year-old unemployed man who said he and his friends had got criminal records defending their neighbourhood in working-class Belfast.

"He sent people out to fight. To die. And now he's putting on a suit and shaking her hand? I don't want war (but) this shouldn't have happened till the next generation."

With splinter groups continuing to attack British targets, security forces say the risk of an attack is at its highest level since the Good Friday peace agreement was signed in 1998.

Nine police suffered minor injuries on Tuesday night when they were pelted with petrol bombs and other missiles.

No secret here that we tend to be beer snobs. Well, actually, we tend to be food, coffee, music, chocolate, and beer snobs. We just have such a hard time drinking beer that tastes like watered down something or other that's not even beer. Aside from the occasional Natty Boh (which is a Baltimore staple, so it's a fair excuse), you'll find us going for the more potent, flavorful, and artfully crafted varieties.

This past Christmas, Andrew's parents gave us a home brew kit. We had tried an English Bitter beer that they had given us a kit for and it turned out fairly well. However, it was a beer that you'd rather drink with food rather than have as a refreshing beverage on a hot Baltimore summer day. As our supply of the first beer dwindled, we decided to brew a second batch-- this time my favorite, an IPA. The process is a long one with a lot of waiting after actually brewing the beer, so at this point we're waiting on the final carbonation process that occurs after the beer has been bottled.

The process starts with a giant pot of very hot water, some grains in a bag, and finally the addition of malt and hops.

It ferments for almost a week after some yeast has been added, and looks something like this when it is ready to be bottled.
Super tasty looking, right? ;)

The next step is to add a priming sugar that starts the carbonation process and then siphon the beer into a new bucket in order to filter out all of that sludge. Finally, it is bottling time!

We've been thinking of a few names for this particular batch and then I'll be designing labels. We'll be waiting about one more week until the beer is ready to drink, so I'll try to update you all then.

Although the Supreme Court only upheld the 'show your papers' part of Arizona's controversial immigration law, some undocumented immigrants worry about being stopped while out in public. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down much of Arizona?s strict anti-illegal immigration law but upheld one of its most controversial provisions has some illegal aliens on edge. But will it prompt them to pack their bags and leave the state anytime soon?

Some may leave?but more likely than not most will stay put, say immigration-rights activists and illegal immigrants contacted by msnbc.com.

?The main thing we?re focusing on is advocating for families not to flee Arizona, to stay here and help fight for their rights to be here,? said Opal Tometi, a member of the board of the Puente Movement, an Arizona-based immigrant rights group, and national organizer for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.?

The Supreme Court struck down key provisions of Arizona?s SB 1070 but said the state could go forward with a?much-debated portion requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they stop, detain or arrest for other reasons if they have ?reasonable suspicion? that the person is in the country illegally. Even there, though, the justices said the "show me your papers? provision could be subject to additional legal challenges and advised states not to apply the law in such a sweeping way that it would become unconstitutional. They also said officers can't arrest people on minor immigration charges.

Gov. Brewer: 'Heart' of immigration law proven constitutional

Tometi said the provision requiring police to try to determine the immigration status of a person stopped for other reasons might deter some undocumented immigrants from coming to Arizona. But she says it?s unlikely to lead to?full-scale departures from the state, especially for families that have been in Arizona illegally for years --?and even decades.

?I think that people will stay,? she said.

?What we?ve decided as a community in Arizona is that we?re going to do community organizing and defend our families, whether they?re documented or undocumented,? Tometi said.?

Both sides declare victory in court's immigration ruling

She said activists are establishing ?barrio defense committees?-- volunteer neighborhood committees that provide a network of support services for people who might be?swept up in detention or deportation proceedings.

Ramirez, who said she has been in the U.S. for 18 years, said the ruling will make routine day-to-day activities??difficult? for her family.

?We?re not going to be living a normal life anymore. We?ll be afraid when we get stopped,? she said.

?We?re not going to be able to take my kids to soccer practice, to soccer games, to movies, to the mall because I?m afraid we're going to be stopped. I don?t want to put my kids in that situation. A lot of people won?t even want to take their kids to school because they?re afraid of being stopped.?

She said while some illegal immigrants might leave, she?s determined to stay.

?Leaving Arizona leaving is not going to resolve anything,? Ramirez said. ?I would say to my community: Stay so we can fight together. People want to raise their kids and have a family. They?re going to risk it.?

Fernando Lopez, 21, says he experienced the provision firsthand -- being arrested after an Arizona Highway patrolman asked for his papers. The Mexican national living in Phoenix is fighting deportation and says even if he hadn't been caught he'd still fight to stay in the U.S.

"My brother left two years ago when the law was passed," he told msnbc.com, but "running is not the solution."

"The least we can do is organize as a community," said Lopez, who does acknowledge it's easier for him to stay since he's not married and has no children.?

The Arizona DREAM Act Coalition, an organization of immigrant youth and their supporters, said the section that was upheld is "conducive to racially profiling citizens, legal residents and undocumented immigrants."

"We will continue to educate our community on how we can overcome the implementation of this section so the impact to the people in our state is minimized," the group said in a statement.

"We encourage the community to stand firm, to not panic, and to stay informed."

Natalie Cruz, 24, also plans to stay and hopes the DREAM Act will give her some protection while she studies in Phoenix. Among her family, one aunt said she'd return to Mexico if the court upheld the police provision, Cruz said, but others plan to stay.

That's not to say life will be the same. "It is going to change how I do things -- like driving," Cruz said.

Jim Gilchrist, founder and president of the Minuteman Project,?a California-based group that advocates tough enforcement of immigration laws, says the Supreme Court opinion is unlikely to have a dramatic impact on illegal immigrants in Arizona.

While local police can inquire about the legal status of someone they stop for probable cause for something else, ?that?s apparently all they can do,? Gilchrist said.

?It doesn?t put any serious teeth into enforcing immigration laws,? he said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says even though the agency expects a lot more calls from Arizona police to check people's immigration status, deportations won't necessarily increase because federal officials are only targeting those who have been convicted of a felony or present a securty threat.

According to property records, Anderson purchased the 1959 house in 2000 for $1.8 million. And according to The Real Estalker, Anderson hit some choppy financial waters in 2009, when she was embroiled in a remodel and was sued by contractors seeking payment. Anderson said her failure to pay wasn't due to lack of funds, but because she disputed the veracity of the billing.

These days, Anderson can be found in far-flung places like Switzerland, where she recently attended the International Art Show in Basel. She also claims to be spending time in her native Canada these days. Because of that, it makes sense to try and turn some profit on the serene Malibu house, which features 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms in 2,700 square feet.
