LIBERTY, Texas ? A jury has sentenced a man convicted of taking part in the repeated sexual assault of a middle school student to 99 years in prison.
Eric McGowen wasn't in court Thursday. He was free on bail when he skipped out during a break in Wednesday's proceedings and is a fugitive.
The jury earlier Thursday found the 20-year-old McGowen guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child. McGowen's lawyer didn't present any evidence or call any witnesses.
McGowen faced a minimum sentence of 25 years prison and a maximum of life.
Prosecutors say he was among 20 men and boys who took part in sexually assaulting the girl on at least five occasions in late 2010, when she was 11.
Six juveniles and two adults have pleaded guilty.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A hardware store clerk was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping, killing and dismembering a lost little boy, bringing an end to a gruesome crime that horrified a tight-knit Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn.
Levi Aron had pleaded guilty this month to lesser charges in a deal that spared him a criminal trial and the possibility of life in prison without parole. When asked Wednesday if he wanted to speak at his sentencing hearing, the 37-year old whispered "no." He will be eligible for parole in 40 years.
Aron wore a black yarmulke, bushy beard and orange prison jumpsuit, and kept his head down and eyes closed for much of the hearing. His attorneys said Aron suffered a head injury as a child that went untreated.
"As a child and a young man, he should have been treated for his mental illness," attorney Howard Greenberg said. Outside court, his attorneys said Aron was sorry ? but a public apology would ring false.
"He's sorry and he wished he hadn't done it," attorney Pierre Bazile said.
Aron admitted he kidnapped and killed 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky after the boy approached him on a Brooklyn street and asked for directions on July 11, 2011. The boy was Hasidic, an ultra-Orthodox version of Judaism, and the killing shocked the community in Borough Park, a safe and somewhat insular neighborhood home to one of the world's largest communities of Orthodox Jews outside Israel. Aron, who lived nearby, was Orthodox but not Hasidic.
Despite the outpouring of support for the family, there were few people in the courtroom Wednesday. Aron's family did not attend the sentencing, nor did Leiby's family. A prosecutor read a statement from the boy's father, Nachman Kletzky, that said, "God did not abandon our son, nor our family, for one second."
"There is no way one can comprehend or understand the pain of losing a child," he wrote. "Esther and I faced this unspeakable tragedy last year when our little boy Leiby was ruthlessly taken from us. ... A day doesn't pass without our thinking of Leiby ? but today we close the door on this one aspect of our tragedy and seek to remember only the gifts that God has bestowed."
The statement was previously read to the news media after Aron's Aug. 9 guilty plea by state assemblyman Dov Hikind, who represents Borough Park and served as a spokesman for the family. He said Wednesday the family wants to put the killing ? and the horiffic details ? behind them.
"It changed our community," Hikind said of the killing, speaking outside court. "It affected everyone in our community. All over the world, people understood what it meant, that it could've been their child."
Leiby got lost on his walk home from a religious day camp. It was the first time he was allowed to walk alone, and he was supposed to travel about seven blocks to meet his mother, but missed his turn.
Barely two days later, detectives found the boy's severed feet, wrapped in plastic, in Aron's freezer. A cutting board and three bloody carving knives were found in the refrigerator. The rest of the boy's body was discovered in bags inside a red suitcase in a trash bin about a mile from Aron's apartment. His legs had been cut from his torso.
The medical examiner's office said Leiby had been drugged then suffocated.
Aron was taken into custody and an unnerving story unfolded about the hours he spent with the boy. Authorities said Aron promised to take Leiby home, but instead he brought the boy upstate to Monsey, N.Y. where he attended a wedding before bringing him back to his apartment. The two watched television before going to sleep. The following morning, Aron left for work at the hardware store, leaving Leiby alone nearly all day in the home.
Meanwhile, a massive search was conducted by his family and friends in the community. When Aron noticed fliers plastered on lampposts with the boy's photo, he says he panicked, went home and suffocated the boy.
Assistant District Attorney Julie Rendelman said Aron knew what he was doing.
"He made a choice that day ... his decision ... was to take this beautiful boy's life," she said.
Aron has said little during court appearances, often looking ahead with a vacant stare, or down at the ground. His attorneys had planned to mount a defense that he was not guilty by reason of mental defect, bolstered by a reported obtained by The Associated Press that said Aron had an adjustment disorder and a personality disorder with schizoid features. "His mood is neutral, practically blank," the psychologist wrote. "The only time he seems to show any emotional response is when he is asked difficult questions about the reason for his incarceration."
During his guilty plea two weeks ago, Aron spoke barely above a whisper. He expressed no remorse and only hinted at motive: At one point he told Judge Neil Firetog he felt "panic" when he found out there was a frantic search on for the boy.
The judge asked him what he decided to do, and he responded simply, "Smother." He also answered yes when asked if he had bound and drugged Leiby.
Leiby's family has filed a lawsuit against Aron's father, who owned the building where his son lived when the boy was killed. They argue that the father should have known something unspeakable was happening under his roof and could have saved the boy if he tried.
Aron's attorneys asked for protective custody for their client because they worry he will hurt himself or be hurt by others. The state department of corrections must decide whether to grant the request.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Marijuana activists in Los Angeles, the hub of America's medical cannabis industry, said on Wednesday they will submit a petition of 50,000 signatures to block a municipal ban on pot dispensaries from taking effect next week.
The move comes amid a widening dispute over pot shops in California's most populous city. Residents complain dispensaries are a nuisance that draw riffraff, but the store owners say they serve patients with serious diseases like cancer and AIDS.
"We believe that this total ban would not allow for safe access for some of the city's sickest patients," said Rigoberto Valdez, vice president of a local union and a member of the Committee to Protect Patients and Neighborhoods.
The committee said it would turn in 50,000 signatures on Thursday, which would immediately put the ban on hold while officials check if more than 27,000 valid signatures are there to force a March 2013 referendum. Until that vote, the city would be prohibited from enforcing the ban, officials said.
Los Angeles has an estimated 1,000 dispensaries. They have multiplied quickly in recent years, even though pot remains illegal under federal law and the U.S. government has cracked down on several cannabis shops in southern California.
A 14-0 vote last month by the mostly liberal Los Angeles City Council to close down the medical marijuana dispensaries represented a significant blow to the industry in a state where voters in 1996 became the first to allow the drug as medicine. But officials had expected the industry to fight back.
The committee challenging the ban is made up of organized labor for dispensary employees, the shops themselves and patients, said Valdez, vice president of United Food and Commercial Workers local 770. The group supports reducing the number of dispensaries in the city to 100.
Seventeen states and the District of Columbia allow medical marijuana. Voters in Washington state, Colorado and Oregon will decide in November whether to allow recreational use of pot.
Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar, the author of the ordinance to ban dispensaries, said he proposed it due to nuisance complaints from residents and dispensaries selling to recreational users faking a medical ailment.
"I've got parents complaining to me that they're walking with their kids down the street, and there's marijuana smoke either coming from the dispensary or people smoking it on the street outside," Huizar said.
Medical marijuana trade group Patient Care Alliance and 11 patients filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court this month seeking to block enforcement of the ban. A judge has not ruled on that request from the group, which is separate from the activists planning to submit signatures on Thursday.

A worker caught on undercover video abusing turkeys at a Butterball factory farm in North Carolina pled guilty Tuesday to felonious cruelty to animals.
Brian Douglas was one of six workers facing charges after undercover video shot by the animal rights group Mercy for Animals and published on the Blotter revealed alleged abuse. An MFA activist had worked undercover at the farm for three weeks and documented what the group called "acts of violence and severe neglect." In the video, workers can be seen kicking and stomping on turkeys, as well as dragging them by their wings and necks.

Hoke County detectives raided the farm on Dec. 28 after seeing the video. During the raid, officials inspected 2,800 turkeys, seizing 28 and euthanizing four.
Douglas will serve 30 days in jail, followed by 42 months of probation. Four other workers were also charged with cruelty to animals, and their cases are pending.
Earlier this year, Dr. Sarah Mason, a veterinarian at the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, was suspended from her job and sentenced to 45 days in the Hoke County jail after pleading guilty to obstructing justice and obstructing a public officer. Mason admitted calling a friend who worked at Butterball prior to the December raid. Her sentence was suspended and she will be on unsupervised probation, but she will be required to take two ethics courses.
Officials charged that Dr. Mason, the Director of Animal Health Programs at the Agriculture Department, had called a Butterball veterinarian on Dec. 23 and allegedly informed him that there was an investigation into the farm. Details of the pending raid, according to prosecutors at the Hoke County District Attorney's office, were supposed to be "treated as confidential, and should not be disclosed."
Though she initially told authorities she had not talked to the Butterball employee, Dr. Mason later admitted telling him about the existence of the Mercy for Animals video showing alleged abuse, and telling him that the video had been given to a county prosecutor.
After conducting an internal investigation, officials at the Agriculture Department suspended Dr. Mason for two weeks without pay. "The Department ... found that Dr. Mason did not at first answer truthfully when she was interviewed on Jan. 5, 2012 by Hoke County authorities about a leak of information about their investigation," said the Agriculture Department in a statement. "We were aware that charges could be brought against Dr. Mason as a result of her actions."
But the department's statement also said that Dr. Mason had not explicitly told anyone at Butterball that there was a criminal investigation in progress, "nor was she aware or did she tell anyone that there was going to be a search warrant served at any of their facilities."
In a statement issued through her attorney, Dr. Mason said her rationale for contacting the Butterball veterinarian -- a longtime personal friend -- was to "immediately curtail" any animal abuse taking place. In addition, Mason stated, "I deeply regret the actions I have taken have reflected poorly on the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services." She stated she recognized the "seriousness of the situation."
Mercy for Animals said there had been no insider information about abuse at the facility before the undercover tape was made. "Unfortunately, every time we send an investigator they emerge with shocking evidence of animal abuse," said MFA executive director Nathan Runkle.
"Butterball allowed a culture of cruelty and abuse to fester at its company-owned factory farms," alleged Runkle. "Before ending up in restaurants and grocery stores, turkeys killed for Butterball are routinely crowded into filthy warehouses, neglected to die from infected, bloody wounds, and thrown, kicked, and beaten by factory farm workers."
Butterball, which accounts for 20 percent of total turkey production in the U.S., has said it was "shocked" by the undercover video, is taking the animal cruelty investigation seriously, and has a "zero tolerance policy for any mistreatment of our birds." The company said that as a result of an internal investigation, it is evaluating its animal welfare policies, and has fired "several associates for failure to follow Butterball animal care and well-being policies."
"We are taking steps to help ensure that all new and existing associates have a clear understanding of our animal well-being policies," said Rod Brenneman, president and CEO of Butterball. "In addition to requiring all associates to sign an animal well-being agreement to report abuse immediately, we are performing an intense review across all company operations."

Finally, review the business' historical and forecasted liquidity and credit (debtors and their payment history, management of cash flow and appropriate working capital facility in place).
Other key risks to evaluate include shareholders; effectiveness of governance/advisory support; competition (who, what are their points of difference and is it likely to change?), and systems (are IT and other systems in place to provide you with reliable information which you can make good decisions?).
With so much to review carefully prior to purchasing a business, I recommend making a thorough list prior to commencing due diligence. ?
Use the expertise of a suitably experienced chartered accountant or adviser to help you undertake an appropriate level of risk analysis.

I've written and said far too much already about the Apple vs. Samsung U.S. court verdict, but two things have stuck with me over the course of the weekend:
First, it was almost uncomfortable watching Apple paint the board aluminum (or whatever color represents Apple in these things). A good fight is a spectacle, but there's no spectacle to be had in a beating like that. Sadly, there was also no Big John McCarthy to pull the jury off, no one gracious enough at Apple to stop the pounding, and no one smart enough at Samsung to throw in the towel. Let's hope now that the bell has rung, this gets settled and settled well before the appeals, bans, and further infringement cases are brought. I don't know who was being more stubborn in the talks to date, Apple or Samsung, but the time for stubborn is over. There's way too much blood on the mats already.
Second, the reaction by extreme Apple and Android supporters on both sides was difficult for me to comprehend. Make no mistake, this was a loss for Samsung, but it was no cause for strutting by Apple. To argue either way is silly. These companies should be fighting over us, not us over them. South Africa aims for number-one spot in all three formats 5.0 out of 5 based on 1 votes.
England will be presented with the Reliance ICC One-Day International Shield at Cardiff on Friday as the number-one ranked side at the annual update of the rankings, but South Africa will get an opportunity to take top spot in the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table in a five-ODI series that starts on Friday 24 August.
Former ICC President David Morgan will be joined by David Collier, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chief Executive, in presenting the Shield to England ODI captain Alastair Cook at the SWALEC Stadium, one of three venues for the ICC Champions Trophy 2013.
Following this year?s annual update, England had become the number-one ranked ODI side, leading second-placed South Africa by one-sixth of a rating point. But if South Africa goes on to win the first match in the series then it will become the first country to hold the number-one rankings spot in all the formats of the game at the same time, having deposed England as the top ranked Test team in the series that finished on Monday.
However, to hold on to the number-one ranking, AB de Villiers? South Africa needs to win the series against England by 3-2 or better. In case of a 5-0 series win for South Africa, Cook?s England will drop to 112 ratings points. In contrast, if England makes a clean sweep of the series, then it will consolidate its hold on the number-one rank, pushing South Africa down to 108 ratings points.
However, England and South Africa?s final position on the table will be determined by the outcome in the three-ODI Pakistan-Australia series scheduled to be held from 28 August to 2 September in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
The England-South Africa and Australia-Pakistan series will feature five of the top 10 ranked players in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen, including number-one ranked Hashim Amla, de Villiers (in third), Cook at sixth, Jonathan Trott (in seventh) and Michael Clarke (in eighth).
In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers, South Africa fast bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe will eye an opportunity to consolidate his number-one position. Tsotsobe is followed by Pakistan's spin duo of Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal. Three others from the top 10, Morne Morkel (in fourth), Steven Finn (in sixth) and seventh-ranked Graeme Swann, will also be in action in the upcoming series.
In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders, third-ranked Hafeez and Shahid Afridi in fourth will eye improvements.
The player rankings will now be updated on 6 September, after the conclusion of the Pakistan-Australia and England-South Africa ODI series.
